Balayage vs Highlights: Which Is Right for You?
If you’ve been scrolling through Instagram dreaming of sun-kissed hair, you’ve probably seen both balayage and highlights pop up constantly. They both lighten your hair — but they look and feel completely different in real life. As one of Toronto’s go-to salons for colour work, we get this question every single week at Album Hair. So here’s our honest breakdown.
What Is Balayage?
Balayage is a French word meaning “to sweep.” Your colourist hand-paints lightener directly onto sections of your hair in sweeping strokes — concentrating colour toward the ends and leaving the roots darker. There are no foils involved.
The result is a gradient effect: darker at the roots, gradually lighter toward the tips. Because the colour is applied freehand, every balayage looks slightly different. It’s a technique, not a single look.
What balayage looks like: Natural, sun-kissed, lived-in. Like your hair got lighter spending summers at the cottage.
What Are Highlights?
Traditional highlights (also called foil highlights) use thin sections of hair wrapped in foil with lightener applied throughout — root to tip. This creates a more uniform, defined contrast between light and dark sections.
Full highlights mean lightened sections throughout your entire head. Partial highlights focus on the top and face-framing sections only.
What highlights look like: Brighter, more structured, more noticeable contrast. Think classic salon colour.
Balayage vs Highlights: Key Differences
Grow-Out
This is where balayage wins for low-maintenance clients. Because there’s no harsh root line — the colour starts mid-shaft or lower — you can go 4 to 6 months between appointments without it looking grown out. Highlights show a root line after 6 to 8 weeks and need more frequent touch-ups.
Brightness
Highlights create more dramatic, noticeable lightening. If you want a big colour change or very bright blonde results, foil highlights will get you there faster. Balayage tends to look more subtle and natural — which is exactly what many clients want, but not right for everyone.
Cost
Balayage typically costs more per session because it’s a more time-intensive, skill-dependent technique. However, because you go longer between appointments, the annual cost often evens out — or balayage comes out cheaper overall.
Hair Health
Both services lighten hair using a similar chemical process. However, because balayage leaves roots untouched and doesn’t saturate hair from root to tip, it’s often gentler overall — especially for clients growing out previous colour.
Which One Is Right for You?
Choose balayage if:
- You want low-maintenance colour you don’t have to touch up constantly
- You prefer a natural, subtle result over high-contrast colour
- Your hair is already coloured and you want a softer grow-out
- You’re new to lightening and want to start gradually
Choose highlights if:
- You want a more dramatic colour change or bright blonde results
- You like a structured, defined look
- You’re okay coming in every 6 to 8 weeks for touch-ups
- You want a classic, polished salon colour look
Can You Combine Them?
Yes — and it’s one of our most popular services at Album Hair. Many clients get foil highlights on the top sections for brightness and dimension, combined with balayage through the mid-lengths and ends for a natural blend. It’s sometimes called “foilayage” and gives you the best of both techniques.
What to Expect at Your Appointment
Whether you book balayage or highlights, your appointment starts with a consultation. We’ll look at your current colour, your hair’s health, and what you’re going for — then recommend the technique (or combination) that gets you there.
Balayage appointments typically run 2.5 to 4 hours depending on your hair length and the depth of colour change. Full foil highlights run 2 to 3 hours. We always include a toner to finish — toner is what takes your colour from brassy yellow to the cool, creamy blonde you see in photos.
